Herd Seeder Company was started by Elmer and Monta Herd. In the mid 40’s, Elmer Herd was a big farmer at that time with a dairy. In the spring, he like others sowed the clover seed by hand and walking. Being a big person, he decided it would wear him out to keep walking. He then invented a tractor mounted P.T.O. seeder. First he had a tool and die company make these units. When sales increased to larger numbers, the tool and die company said they did not want to be in the production business. The company was started in 1948, the bookkeeping was done on the kitchen table and the rest is history.
